Le Perche...

JEAN GUYON-DION (or Dion-Guyon)...  was a master mason and a surveyor.  He was recruited in Mortagne, Normandy, March 4, 1634 by Robert Giffard and set sail soon after from Dieppe with his 16-year old son, Jean.  It was May 1634 and they were destined for Canada where they arrived in Québec on June 4, 1634.  On that same voyage were Zacharie Cloutier and the Boucher brothers, Gaspard and Marin and over thirty other contract workers.  This would be Robert Giffard's first successful group of settlers from the Perche region of Normandy.

In 1636, Jean Guyon's wife Mathurine Robin and their children, Simon, Marie, Claude, Denis and Michel (who was born days before his father signed the three-year contract to work for Giffard in New France) departed Mortagne for Canada.  Their oldest daughter Barbe emigrated from Mortagne in 1652 with her husband Pierre Paradis and their 5 children.

Jean Guyon was baptized in St. Aubin church in the village of Tourouvre in September 1592.  He spent his childhood there where his parents had a house.  Jean's father, Jacques Guyon, was listed among the notables of the town in a document dated November 21, 1604.  It is said that young, Jean received a good education for those of his social status (artisans, tradesmen), he wrote well and could understand the calculations necessary to work as a surveryor.

In 1615, he constructed a thirty-step, stone staircase leading to the bell tower of the church where he had been christened.  Remarkably, that staircase is still intact to this day.

After his marriage in June of 1615, Jean Guyon settled in Mortagne where there was a lot of restoration work required after the devastation of the Religious Wars (1562-1598).  Soon he became a well-respected mason.  In July of 1625, he was given the job of working on the fortification of the town of Mortagne.  It was there that Jean's skills as a stone-cutter brought him to the attention of Robert Giffard who was then in the process of establishing a seigneury at Beauport, Quebec.

At the end of the work contract with Robert Giffard, Jean Guyon was to receive 1000 arpents (approx. acres) of land, which was given to him in March 1637, a fief that was to be name Dubuisson.  The contract equally mentioned Zacharie Cloutier who was to receive 1000 arpents as well.

During the initial years of the contract, Jean and his son would receive a portion of the cleared land and they would be fed and accomodated as would be the rest of the family (wife and five children) who would join them later.  Robert Giffard further contracted to give them two cows and have a house built for the family.  They were even given the right to partake in dealings concerning the fur trade with the native people.

*

In all, 15 members of Jean Guyon's family emigrated to New France.  They were his wife Mathurine Robin and their seven children, his son-in-law Pierre Paradis, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jean Guyon died in Québec in May 1663.  His wife, Mathurine Robin had died the year before, in April 1662.

*

Eldest daughter, Barbe Guyon married to Pierre Paradis is part of the Camirand (Dargie) line.  The other children belonging in this line are Marie Guyon-Dion married to François Bélanger and Claude Guyon-Dion married to Catherine Collin.  Another son, Simon Guyon-Dion married to Louise Racine is found in the Lizotte (Sénéchal) line.

Jean Guyon-Dion's grand-daughter, Marie-Thérèse, the child of his son, Dénis Guyon-Dion was married to Antoine deLamothe dit Cadillac, the founder of Detroit, or as it was then known, Fort Pontchartrain.

His youngest son, François Guyon-Dion, was a friend of Lamothe Cadillac and was guardian of his brother Denis's children at his death in 1685.  Marie-Thérèse Guyon-Dion would have been 14 years old at the time.

A note:  The surname Dion got attached to the Guyon name at some point in Canada.  A spelling error?  After all, Dion and Guyon (occasionally spelled Guion) are pronounced nearly alike in French.  In France, all the documents pertaining to Jean Guyon and his family use the name/spelling Guyon.

A side note, 16-year old Jean Guyon who arrived in Canada in 1634 with his father would become the direct ancestor of singer, Céline Dion.  Also, through another son of young Jean Guyon, he becomes the direct ancestor of Camilla (Shand) Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of Great Britain.

Much of the information for this narrative was gathered from: Programme de Recherche sur l'Emigration des Français en Nouvelle France (PREFEN), website : www.unicaen.fr

The genealogy of it all...  this is a complicated one because my ancestors involve four of Jean Guyon and Mathurin Robin's children, and three of Barbe Guyon and Pierre Paradis' children.  Six family lines.

*

Each indentation indicates another generation, ie: Barbe Guyon is the daughter of Jean Guyon and Mathurine Robin; Jacques Paradis is the son of Barbe Guyon and Pierre Paradis, and so on.

A carat (>) indicates there is at least another sibling who is an ancestor, ie:  Barbe Guyon has three siblings, Simon, Marie and Claude Guyon who are also ancestors.

A double carat (>>) indicates there is at least another sibling who is an ancestor at the next generational level, ie:  Jacques Paradis (son of Barbe Guyon and Pierre Paradis) has two sisters, Marie and Marie-Madeleine Paradis who are also ancestors.
