ZACHARIE CLOUTIER... was a master carpenter. He and his family were among the first settlers recruited by Robert Giffard. The family sailed from Normandie in May of 1634 with Jean Guyon and the Bouchers, Gaspard and Marin. His experience, in many ways, mirrors that of Jean Guyon since their work contracts appear to be exactly the same.
Zacharie Cloutier entered into a contract before Notary Mathurin Roussel of Mortagne, to go to Canada as a master carpenter for the duration of 5 years. He and his 17-year old son, Pierre-Zacharie would receive cleared land, they would be provided food and shelter for themselves as well as the rest of the family. Robert Giffard promised to give them 2 cows, and to have a house built for them. They would receive a holding of 1000 arpents (acres) conceded in the fief : La Clousterie. They even were given the right to trade merchandise with the Indians (sauvages).
The Cloutiers, father and son, sailed from Dieppe and arrived in Québec in June of 1634. It appears his wife, Sainte DuPont and their four other children sailed the following year.
Cloutier’s holding, the fief of La Clouterie (or La Cloutièrerie) brought him into conflict with his neighbour Jean Guyon and with Robert Giffard, his seigneur. He sold it to Nicolas Dupont de Neuville in December of 1670 in order to go and settle at Château-Richer, where he had already received a land grant from Governor Jean de Lauson in July 1652. Zacharie Cloutier signed himself with a mark shaped like an axe. Note: this paragraph taken from the Dictionary of Canadian Biographie Online, www.biographi.ca

Zacharie Cloutier was born in Mortagne, Normandy around 1590. He died in Chateau Richer, PQ in September 1677. His wife, Sainte DuPont died three years later. Considering the hardships in terms of weather and harvests this couple must have endured, they lived relatively long lives.
Members of Zacharie Cloutier's family who emigrated to New France are:
Zacharie Cloutier, son (ancestor Pierre-Zacharie)
Sainte Dupont, wife
Jean Cloutier, son (ancestor)
Anne Cloutier, daughter (ancestor)
Charles Cloutier, son
Louise Cloutier. daughter (ancestor)
All the children but Charles are ancestors in the Lizotte-Sénéchal, Ouellette lines. A daughter, Sainte, died in France in 1632 at the age of 9.
In 1634, the settlement of Canada was under the authority of a French company, known as The 100 Associates. These were businessmen who ventured capital into the fur-trading enterprise in the hopes of commercial profits. The King of France sanctioned this activity with the stipulation that settlers be brought to Canada. To satisfy the King and minimize economic losses, the company resorted to the granting of subfiefs in Canada to 'seigneurs' (overlords) who were required to bring settlers. The first such grant was made in 1634 to Robert Giffard who brought out workmen and farm laborers. This bit of history was taken from the book, "France in America" by W. J. Eccles, p. 34.
In 1677, this family was established at Chateau Richer in the county of Montmorency.
The family is listed on the 1666 census as living in the Québec area. At the time, the 77-year old Cloutier was considered a habitant (settler), seigneur (landlord) and a carpenter.
The genealogy of it all... this is another complicated listing because my ancestors involve:
four of Zacharie Cloutier and Sainte DuPont's children (Pierre, Jean, Anne and Louise Cloutier)
three of daughter, Louise Cloutier and Jean Mignot's children (Jean-Aubin, Thérèse and Xainte Mignot)
two of Thérèse Mignot and Nicolas Lebel's children (Angélique and Nicolas Lebel)
two of Xainte Mignot and Jean Grondin's children (Anne-Xainte and Louise Grondin)
two of Louise Grondin and Pierre Albert's children (Marie-Claire and Genevieve Albert)
Nine family lines all coming from one set of ancestors Zacharie Cloutier and Sainte (or Xainte) DuPont.

Each indentation indicates another generation, ie: Pierre-Zacharie Cloutier is the son of Zacharie Cloutier and Sainte DuPont; Marie Cloutier is the daughter of Pierre-Zacharie Cloutier and Madeleine Aymard, and so on.
A carat (>) indicates there is at least another sibling who is an ancestor, ie: Pierre-Zacharie Cloutier has three siblings, Jean, Anne and Louise Cloutier who are also ancestors.
A double carat (>>) indicates there is at least another sibling who is an ancestor at the next generational level, ie: Jean-Aubin Mignot (son of Louise Cloutier and Jean Mignot) has two sisters, Thérèse and Sainte Mignot who are also ancestors.
And so on...
